Currency: Nuevo Sol (S/.) PEN Banknotes currently circulating include 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10 Nuevos Soles, while there are coins for 1, 2 and 5 Nuevos Soles and for 50, 20, 10 and 5 cents. Please note that US dollars are commonly accepted in most hotels, stores and supermarkets in Lima, as well as in other main cities around the country. It is suggested to bring small $1 dollar notes with you, for tipping or paying any small fees for when you first arrive in Lima. Most credit cards are accepted.


You can exchange your US Dollars at the airport. Outside the airport, it is suggested to exchange money in banks, because they offer more security and guarantees. As a safety precaution, do not use the services of street moneychangers, even if they are formally registered with district municipalities, as it is not advisable that you make money transactions in public.




In addition to the police, many districts in Lima have security services for its citizens (Serenazgo) as well as Tourism police.



In Peru, all goods and services are taxed 18% (IGV) but foreigners are exempt of this tax in hotels. Some restaurants and hotels have an added 10% service fee. By law, all traders have the obligation to show the client the final price, including taxes.
